Jury Duty

Jury Duty

Jury service is one of the most important civic duties you can perform.  As a juror you play a vital role in our legal system because the legal system is based on the belief that a just and fair verdict comes from the decision of a collective group of honest and impartial citizens.  Each case can be life-changing to the parties involved, affording each juror the highest responsibility in the administration of justice.

During a jury trial, the protection of rights and liberties is largely achieved through teamwork.  The teamwork of a judge and jury.  The judge is responsible in determining the law to be applied and has the responsibility of explaining to the jury how that law is applicable in each individual case.  Jurors are responsible for hearing the facts of a case and issuing a verdict based on those facts and the law.

We are grateful to all past and present jurors' willingness to accept this responsibility.  We wish to extend our appreciation for your jury service knowing how difficult but valuable it can be.  Thank you.

Below are commonly asked questions about jury duty in the Wayne County Court of Common Pleas. Hopefully, this will answer some of the questions you may have. If not, please contact Jury Commissioner, Sarah Coy.  Her contact information is listed below.

How Long is my Jury Duty?

You are on call for a two-month term. That doesn't mean you are here for two months. You will receive a summons for a specific trial date. To find out whether you are required to report as summoned, you need to call the night before your scheduled jury duty. The recording will accept collect calls. A recorded message will instruct you. If the recording tells you to report, please come to the Wayne County Court of Common Pleas, located at 107 West Liberty Street, Wooster, Ohio 44691. You will then need to report to the baliff of the Courtroom where the trial is to take place. If the recording tells you not to report, you don't need to do anything until you get another summons. The phone numbers for the jury duty recordings are:

Jurors for 8:30 AM: 330-264-4182
Jurors for 8:45 AM: 330-264-9944

Please check your Summons for the correct time of your Jury Duty.

Where should I park?

You may park in any of the parking lots indicated on your notice for jury duty. Do not park in "permit only" areas of the parking lots. Use the 3-hour parking areas only. The court is not responsible for parking violations. If you have special needs, please contact Jury Comissioner Sarah Coy for a blue parking pass.

What are the hours?

Court is usually in session from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with a break for lunch between noon and 1:00 PM. However, the hours depend on what's happening in the trial. For example, when the jury starts to deliberate, you may be here into the evening if your deliberations require it.

How much do I get paid and how do I receive it?

The pay is $30.00 per day if you are seated; $10.00 if you have to report and are excused. You will get a check in the mail after the end of your term. To receive payment, you must check in with the Clerk of Courts office every day you're here.

How did I get selected?

Voter registration lists are fed into a computer after the November election and prospective jurors are randomly selected. Your name was on the list for this term.

Who do I contact if I have a problem?

The courthouse is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you have a problem or question regarding jury service, please call Jury Commissioner Sarah Coy at:

phone: 330-287-5532
email: scoy@waynecourts.org

How do I prove to my employer that I was here?

You may obtain a form from the Jury Commissioner listing the dates you were in court for jury duty. This can be obtained daily or at the end of your jury service.
